A 22-year-old woman who dreams of being an artist, though she knows her status as a gentleman's daughter makes her dreams unlikely. She is passionate, extremely impulsive, and absolutely adores her cat Plum. She also adores vexing her often surly husband. Oh, and she's Turning into a Vampire.

While at first Lucy only sees the beautiful mystery of the Vampires, she soon si exposed to darker side after being bitten and acting as a Vampire spy for the Hunters. When she witnesses Vampires killing for fun and just because they can, it strengthens her resolve to master her new vampiric abilities and help the Hunters end the Night. She may be a monster now, but she can be good

A 27-year-old Hunter known for his extreme dedication and workaholic tendencies. He is confident in his strength as a Hunter and he takes his job protecting the humans of Novara extremely seriously. When he finds Lucy so casually playing with her life by lingering at the border of the vampire districts he is extremely frustrated with her. But also, maybe, slightly intrigued by her bravery? Who's to say?

Silas is often at odds with his strict, conservative father. While Alistair Carver sees Lucy as a convenient tool to throw away when she ceases to be useful, Silas sees her as a person ignores his father when it comes to keeping an emotional distance from Lucy. Silas' biggest fear is Lucy one day losing control and that he'll have to be the one to end her.

Gwen is Lucy's childhood best friend and is there for Lucy through thick and thin, even when she starts to Turn into a vampire. Gwen does not approve of Lucy's going to the edge of the Vampire district, and though it makes her extremely nervous, she accompanies Lucy so she won't be alone.

Gwen loves plants and is super passionate about learning about species that once lived in the Sun, something she has never seen growing up with the endless Night. Her plant knowledge will be put to use when she eventually works with Lucy to search for a cure to vampirism.

In true best friend fashion, she quickly catches on when Lucy develops feelings for Silas.

Eli is Silas' friend and hunting partner. While Eli loves Silas like a brother, he can't help but feel inferior to Silas as a Hunter. Silas has always shown exemplary skill and is the youngest member of the Hunter Council. Meanwhile, Eli feels like he's constantly struggling and never getting anywhere. His inferiority complex causes him to turn to the Vampire priest, Gaius, who offers his blood to the Hunters since it acts as a sort of steroid when ingested by them. However, Eli's consumption of vampire blood has a cost, and he'll find he must choose between Gaius and his fellow Hunters.

Eli reciprocates Gwen's feelings.
